The California Supreme Court agrees to review Prop 8!
The Prop 8 Challenge has gone through and will be heard by the California Supreme Courts. They will be reviewing whether the passing of Proposition 8 was legal due to the way it altered fundamental aspects of the Constitution. However, there are already threats of recalls if the courts strike it down. Now is the time for education! We must NOT be DIVIDED so we CANNOT be CONQUERED!
I understand that there is a lot of anger and hurt over the passing of Proposition8 and please understand that my calmness comes out of a feeling of desperate necessity not lack of passion.
It scares me to hear us as a community point fingers at other historically disenfranchised and persecuted minority groups. The disenfranchised must band together! The marginalized must gather along the edges until we force our way through the center! This is the only way! We won’t be able to win this fight by pointing out our differences, creating enemy lines, and blaming those which we can, through common understanding, make allies!
While rally cries of “Chickens have more rights than Gays” may have a nice ring to it we have to understand how the violence of the farming industries mirrors the institutionalized violence of the oppressed. We as agents of the majority group must reach down to support there [animals] liberation as well if we are calling on people to listen to the voice of their internal humanity!
I am not, and would NEVER, propose that we COVER, or CLOSET, or PASS.
This isn’t about making people we feel are closed minded comfortable. This is about saying we deserve rights and believing in those statements enough that we don’t lash out when threatened. That we hold our ground. That we take the higher road. That we don’t let them trick us into fighting amongst ourselves while the real problem, challenging the power of the oppressor, goes unscathed and grows stronger. Those who aren’t ashamed, who aren’t backed into a corner, aren’t on the defensive– they’re on the offensive. Let us dictate how these challenges will be met. They are affecting OUR lives. They should be battled on our HOME GROUND.
Proposition 8 is not about who did it to us or who is gaining ground while we are pushed back. Proposition 8 is about US. Stay focused. Stay confident. Stay united. I fear that this is the only way we can prevail… and if we fail to achieve these goals… I’m not sure how much hope we’ll have left.
